Free File Providers for South Carolina

In January 2014, the South Carolina Department of Revenue will list offers from online filing providers who provide FREE electronic filing of both the federal and South Carolina returns to QUALIFIED South Carolina taxpayers.  For tax year 2012, over 54,500 South Carolina taxpayers filed both their IRS and South Carolina returns for FREE using Free File.

Each provider sets forth qualifications that South Carolina taxpayers must meet in order to qualify for FREE electronic filing of both the federal and South Carolina returns.  By listing these products, the South Carolina Department of Revenue in no way endorses a particular tax filing product or group of products nor does it guarantee the truthfulness of statements made by online software providers.

It is very important that if you utilize a Free File offer for South must start your return by clicking on one of the links below for Free File on the SC DOR website.  This is to insure the free filing of your federal and South Carolina returns.  Use of other sites that promote a free federal return will not guarantee your ability to also file your South Carolina return for free.  If you DO NOT qualify for any of the Free File offers, DON'T GIVE UP!  Scroll down to read about other possible alternative electronic filing options.

REMINDER:  If you EFile using either the Free File products below or South Carolina Fillable Forms or using any electronic filing software product that supports South Carolina, you have until May 1st to timely file (AND pay if you have a balance due)!  The May 1st date does NOT apply to federal returns nor does it apply to returns submitted to South Carolina on paper.  Do not be concerned about the timeliness of your filing if you have submitted the return timely, but DO NOT have confirmation (an acknowledgement) from South Carolina by the filing deadline.  South Carolina recognizes the date/time that the return is submitted to the IRS as the "postmark" date.  That is considered the date SC DOR received the return.

SC Fillable Forms is CLOSED for TY2013!  It will return for TY2014!

South Carolina Fillable Forms is a FREE product designed for South Carolina taxpayers who need to file a very simple South Carolina return.  Upon clicking on the link provided, you will be prompted to create a user ID and password to access South Carolina Fillable Forms.   Two key things to remember...South Carolina Fillable Forms is FREE AND it is for the filing of ONLY your South Carolina return!

South Carolina Fillable Forms will only accurately file your return, if you provide complete and accurate information AND follow the directions provided by the software.  Fillable Forms will perform math calculations for you by asking you to click on the "Do the Math"button, but has very limited edits on the data you submit.

It is a good idea to work out your South Carolina return on paper BEFORE accessing South Carolina Fillable Forms.  That way you already have all of your W2s and other necessary forms together.  Line 1 of the SC1040 requires you to enter your federal taxable income.  You will need to have completed your federal return in order to provide that information.

South Carolina Fillable Forms provides the ability to file your return either by completing the return, printing it out and mailing it to the agency OR you can click on the EFile button to electronically submit the return.  If you elect to EFile, you will be prompted to provide W2 and/or 1099 information.  If you elect to EFile, DO NOT mail your return to the SC Department of Revenue as it could delay your refund.  If you elect to print and mail your return, your return will have a 2D barcode printed on it.  DO NOT make any marks on the paper return other than signing the return in the appropriate space!

ONLY the SC1040, the I-319 (Tuition Tax Credit), and the I-330 (Contributions for Checkoffs) are supported for filing by South Carolina Fillable Forms.  Additionally, not all of the lines of the SC1040 are supported (see the bulleted list above on this page).  South Carolina Fillable Forms DOES NOT allow the filing of your federal return to the IRS!

South Carolina Fillable Forms is offered by a third party Free File software provider.

  • South Carolina Fillable Forms is now CLOSED.  South Carolina Fillable Forms will open for the TY2014 filing season in late January or early February, 2015.

NOTES (PLEASE may tell you how to get the EFILE NOW button to activate AND prevent your return from being rejected!):

  • To get the EFILE NOW button to activate on the STEP 2: EFILE YOUR TAX FORMS screen, make sure you click on the DONE WITH THIS FORM button on the Step 2: EFILE YOUR TAX FORMS screen!
  • The software will properly calculate your return if you leave the lines blank and click on DO THE MATH.  Please enter data only in lines where there is actual data to provide.
    • If you do not have any federal taxable income to report on line 1 of the SC1040, you should enter a '0' on line 1 of the SC1040.
  • If you elect to receive your refund by direct deposit, you MUST select either Checking or Savings for the account type.  If you do not select Checking or Savings, the return will be REJECTED.
  • Below line 34 of the SC1040, there is a "Go Paperless!" section where you are asked to indicate you want to receive your 1099-G/INT income tax refund statement electronically next year.  You must check the box AND provide your email address OR leave both blank for your return to not be rejected.  If you check the box and leave the email address blank or do not check the box and provide your email, your return will be REJECTED.
