Boiling Springs woman charged with tax evasion
A Boiling Springs woman was arrested today by South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators and charged with state income tax evasion.
Catherine Maddaloni-Smith, 41, is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center pending a bond hearing. She is charged with two counts of claiming fraudulent tax deductions on her 2002 and 2003 state tax returns.
Maddaloni-Smith is accused of falsifying business losses and business expenses to lower her state tax liability. The revenue department estimates she avoided paying more than $3,000 in state income taxes for the two years by claiming the fraudulent deductions.
She is facing up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $20,000 if convicted of the charges.
