Department of Revenue follows IRS
South Carolina taxpayers will have an extra two days to file their 2006 state income tax returns this year without incurring penalties and interest.
The South Carolina Department of Revenue will follow the Internal Revenue Service in allowing taxpayers until midnight Tuesday, April 17 to file their tax returns. The IRS is allowing the extra two days because the traditional April 15 tax deadline falls on a Sunday, and Monday, April 16 is Emancipation Day, an observed holiday in some areas of the country. While Emancipation Day is not observed in South Carolina, the state revenue department will still grant the same filing extension as the IRS.
The April 17 deadline applies to any returns and tax payments that have an April 16 due date. Taxpayers who file their state individual income tax return electronically still have until May 1 to file without incurring any penalties and interest.
"South Carolina law affords us the ability to conform to the Federal filing date," said Department of Revenue Director Ray N. Stevens, "and we think it is the right thing to do to avoid any taxpayer or tax preparer confusion."
