Pawley's Island man arrested on tax charges

A Pawley's Island Certified Public Accountant was arrested by South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators today on charges of failing to pay his state income tax.

Rex Eugene Wicker, 47, is charged with six counts of state income tax evasion. He is being held at the Georgetown County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

Wicker is accused of willfully failing to file his personal state income tax returns from 2000 2005, and report and pay the state tax on income of $729,855 during that period. The revenue department estimates Wicker's total tax liability for that period at $18,258.

He is facing up to 30 years in prison and fines of up to $60,000 if convicted of all the charges.

Georgetown County Sheriff Department deputies assisted in Wicker's arrest.
