S.C. Department of Revenue reminds electronic filers of May 1st filing deadline
COLUMBIA, S.C. With more than 1.7 million individual income tax returns processed in South Carolina this year, the South Carolina Department of Revenue reminds taxpayers who choose to file electronically of the May 1st deadline.
South Carolinians who file their South Carolina state individual income tax return electronically have until May 1st to file a state return and pay their state taxes, if owed, to avoid incurring penalties and interest. The May 1st electronic filing deadline only applies to state returns. The deadline for filing a paper return was April 17.
As of April 18, the Department of Revenue has processed approximately 1.7 million of the 2.1 million returns the agency expects to receive.
Of the 1.7 million processed returns:
- 1,217,134 were filed electronically.
- 1,193,446 received a refund. The average refund is $683.
If taxpayers are to receive a refund, all electronic filing methods provide the option of having refunds deposited directly into the individual's bank account. Taxpayers who owe taxes can visit www.sctax.org and click on DORePay to pay using a credit card (MasterCard or VISA), take advantage of Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW), which allows the Department to withdraw money from their bank checking or savings account at a time selected by the taxpayer, or submit form SC 1040-V along with their payment for the balance due to SC Department of Revenue, Electronic Filing, Columbia, SC 29214-0020.
For tax tips, information about electronic filing, or to check on the status of your refund, visit www.sctax.org.
