Charleston Couple Arrested for Tax Evasion
Charleston, SC…South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators arrested a former North Charleston Sewer District employee and his wife this morning on charges of income tax evasion. George J. Washington, 48, and his wife Terrie U. Washington, 48, are being held at the Charleston County Detention Center pending a bond hearing this afternoon. George is charged with four counts--Terrie with three counts--of state income tax evasion. George Washington is accused of claiming fraudulent deductions on his tax returns from 2000 – 2003 to obtain a larger refund than he was entitled, as did Terrie Washington from 2001-2003. The Department estimates the Washington’s total tax liability from fraudulent claims during that period is $4,135. George is facing up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $40,000 if convicted of all the charges. Terrie is facing up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $30,000 if convicted of all the charges.
