Greenville resident charged with tax evasion

South Carolina Department of Revenue criminal investigators arrested a Greenville resident today on multiple charges of state tax evasion.

Tangela L. Ray, 37, was charged with three counts of state tax evasion and one count of willful failure to pay taxes. She was release from the Greenville County Detention Center this afternoon on a $20,000 personal recognizance bond.

Ray, an employee of a Spartanburg County manufacturer, is accused of filing fraudulent W-4 employee withholding forms with her employer from 2002 through 2005 to avoid having state income taxes withheld from her wages. The department investigation also showed in 2002, Ray attempted to avoid paying state income tax by filing a state tax return claiming excessive business losses from a non-existent business.

Ray's tax liability for the period she is accused of tax evasion is estimated at $11,036. She is facing up to 16 years in prison and fines of up to $40,000 if convicted of the charges.
