A Greenville County resident was jailed over the weekend following his arrest for state tax evasion charges.

South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators charged Christopher Lawton of Greer, with five counts of income tax evasion for tax years 2004-2008. He is being held at the Greenville County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

The Department of Revenue investigation showed Lawton earned income in excess of $392,350 from 2004 to 2008.  Lawton is accused of filing fraudulent W-4 withholding forms with his employer to avoid having taxes withheld from his wages. His state tax liability for the period charged is $12,730.

Evans is facing up to 25 years in prison and fines of up to $50,000 if convicted of the charges.
