Horry County Couple Arrested for Tax Evasion

Surfside Beach, SC…South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators this morning arrested a timeshare salesman and his wife on charges of income tax evasion.

Alfred Samuel Branham, Jr., 52, and his wife Deborah Miles Branham, 50, are being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Facility in Horry County pending a bond hearing. Mr. and Mrs. Branham are charged with four counts of state income tax evasion.

Alfred Branham, Jr. is accused of forming a Florida corporation and having monies he earned paid to his corporation causing the earnings not to be reported to him on a W-2 tax form from 2004- 2007. Deborah Branham is accused of claiming more exemptions on a W-4 tax form than she was entitled resulting in a lesser amount of state taxes being withheld from her earnings, thereby evading the assessment of the tax from 2004-2007.

The Department estimates the Branham's total tax liability for the four year period is $12,282.

Both Alfred and Deborah are facing up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $40,000 if convicted of all the charges.

The Horry County Sheriff's Office assisted with the arrests.
