Upstate Car Dealership Owners Arrested on State Tax Charges
Greenville, SC…South Carolina Department of Revenue criminal investigators arrested a Greenville County couple on state tax charges arising from their business activities in Greenville and Spartanburg Counties.
Terry L. Baker, 60, and his wife Patricia Ann Baker, 57, were charged with criminal conspiracy and numerous counts of failing to file state sales tax returns for calendar years 2004 through 2008.
Terry and Ann Baker owned and operated T&A Baker Auto Sales in Greenville County from 2004 to 2008. They also operated a location in Spartanburg County during 2007 and 2008. They are accused of failing to file sales tax returns for both business locations for calendar years 2004 through 2008, thereby failing to report gross income in excess of $6,000,000.
The Department estimates the Baker’s total tax liability is in excess of $250,000 for the period.
They each received a personal recognizance bond of $125,000 in Greenville County. They are currently lodged in the Spartanburg County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
The couple is facing up to 8 years in prison and fines of up to $80,000 if convicted of all the charges.
