Education Capital Improvements Tax implemented in Charleston County
Charleston, SC --- Effective March 1, 2011, the 1% Education Capital Improvements Tax will be implemented on all tangible personal property delivered in or into Charleston County including all rentals of accommodations and charges of guest services at hotels and other places furnishing accommodations.
The 1% Education Capital Improvements Tax is placed in addition to the 6% statewide rate, 1% Local Option Sales Tax and .5% local Transportation Tax already imposed in Charleston County. Upon implementation, the sales and use tax rate in Charleston County will be 8.5% (9.5% for rental of accommodations) for state and local taxes.
The county should start receiving benefit from this specific tax money in May.
