Richland County man arrested on eight counts of tax related charges

Ricky Romelo Harris, Jr. was arrested today by South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators.

The SCDOR charged Harris, a Columbia resident, with four counts of forgery and four counts of assisting in the preparation of a false return.

The investigation revealed that Harris provided fraudulent information to taxpayers in order to have their 2009 tax returns prepared.

Harris provided individuals with W-2 forms that included wages that the individuals did not earn, taxes that were not withheld and employers where the individuals did not work. The fraudulent W-2 forms were then used by the taxpayers to file their tax returns generating tax refunds they were not entitled to receive.

Also in 2010, Harris prepared a fraudulent 2009 tax return for a taxpayer with fraudulent W-2 form information requesting tax refunds. Harris presented the information to the SCDOR without the taxpayer’s knowledge or consent.

Harris is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on a $50,000 cash surety bond. Additional charges are forthcoming.
