Spartanburg man arrested on six counts of tax related charges
Spartanburg, S.C. --- Tommy L. Cobb, of Pacolet Road in Spartanburg, was arrested today on three counts of forgery and three counts of assisting in the preparation of a false return.
For tax years 2007, 2008 and 2009, Cobb, 38, knowingly presented fraudulent W2 forms to a tax preparer in order to have his individual income tax returns prepared. The fraudulent returns were then submitted to the SC Department of Revenue and Cobb received refunds totaling $12,132, to which he was not entitled.
By willfully preparing and submitting the fraudulent W2 forms and requesting refunds, Cobb committed the crimes of forgery and willfully assisting in the preparation of a false return.
If convicted of the charges, Cobb could face up to 30 years in prison and/or $1,500 in fines. Cobb is currently being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the arrest.
