Leesville couple arrested for income tax evasion
Columbia, SC --- South Carolina Department of Revenue officials arrested a husband and wife today for attempting to avoid paying their income taxes for 2007 through 2010. Jeffrey and Cathy Clark are each charged with four counts of income tax evasion and if found guilty, they each could face up to 20 years in prison and/or $40,000 in fines.
During 2007 through 2010, the couple filed joint state income tax returns, each year reporting a gross income of zero and requesting a tax refund. The investigation of the couple’s income revealed Mr. and Mrs. Clark had gross income of $406,356 and incurred a state tax liability of over $20,000. Additionally, the Clarks each submitted fraudulent W4 Forms, causing a reduction in state withholdings.
Both individuals are currently being held at the Lexington County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
