Individuals linked to Charleston tax refund scam arrested

Two men were arrested today by the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) as an investigation into a Charleston area income tax refund fraud case advances.

Trevor Alston, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Aubrey German, of Huger, SC, were arrested this morning at the Charleston County Detention Center for separate counts of assisting in the preparation of a false return and forgery.

Review of Trevor Alston’s 2009 tax return revealed that the subject submitted via a tax preparer a fraudulent W2 form in which Alston inflated the wages and withholding information. The use of the fraudulent W2 form resulted in Alston, 23, receiving federal and SC income tax refunds of $4,954 and $618, respectively, to which he was not entitled. Alston is facing charges of up to $500 in fines and/or 15 years in jail if convicted of the two charges.

SCDOR determined that Aubrey German’s 2008 income tax returns were prepared and submitted containing a W2 form in which German, 28, had inflated the wages and withholding information, thus receiving fraudulent federal and state tax refunds in the amounts of $3,720 and $620, respectively. If convicted of the charges, German could face up to $500 in fines and/or 10 years in prison.

These arrests follow an ongoing SCDOR investigation in which now 11 arrests in the Charleston area have been conducted in the past weeks. For information on preceding arrests involving this fraudulent tax refund scam, visit www.sctax.org and click on “Publications”.
