Conway woman arrested for tax charges
Columbia, SC (September 26, 2012) --- Wanda Conyers of Conway was arrested this afternoon by SC Department of Revenue investigators for three tax charges including forgery, assisting in the preparation of a false tax return and conspiracy.
Conyers, 31, was taken to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center where she is awaiting a bond hearing. If convicted Conyers could face charges of up to 15 years in prison and/or $5,500 in fines for the three felony charges.
Conyers willfully assisted in the preparation of a fraudulent 2011 individual income tax return and knowingly submitted a forged W2 form to a tax preparer in order to have a tax return prepared. The forged W2 form alleged Conyers earned $12,599 in wages and had taxes withheld from her wages; Conyers did not work for this employer. The fraudulent W2 form resulted in a false income tax return being submitted, and tax refunds totaling $9,073 were requested of which Conyers was not entitled.
The SC Department of Revenue investigation revealed that Conyers and another individual conspired to commit the offense of willfully assisting in the preparation of a false income tax return as Conyers was advised of the tax scam by another individual.
