Further arrests made in SCDOR’s Charleston tax fraud investigation

 

Columbia, SC (October 25, 2012) --- Investigators from the SC Department of Revenue have arrested more individuals who have partaken in an income tax fraud scam in the Charleston, SC area.

 

Richard Horry of Mt. Pleasant was arrested today and taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center where he was charged with two counts of forgery. Horry is currently awaiting a bond hearing.

 

For the 2008 and 2009 tax years, Horry electronically filed fraudulent state income tax returns using falsified W2 forms from an employer where he did not work. Horry claimed tax refunds to which he was not entitled and has a state tax liability of $1,301.

 

Horry could face penalties of up to 20 years in prison and/or be fined at the discretion of the court if convicted of the charges.

 

Another individual, Porsha Manigault, 24, was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts of assisting in the preparation of a fraudulent income tax return and two counts of forgery. If convicted of the charges, Manigault could potentially face up to 25 years in prison and/or be fined at the discretion of the court.

 

A Mt. Pleasant resident, Manigault filed fraudulent tax returns for 2008 and 2009 using falsified W2 forms from various employers. For these tax years, she received and claimed state tax refunds totaling $1,425 to which she was not entitled.
