Resident of Hilton Head Arrested on Tax Evasion Charges

Columbia, SC (March 1, 2013) --- SC Department of Revenue investigators today arrested a Hilton Head woman in an ongoing investigation targeting individuals who claim to be exempt from taxation with their employers and therefore fail to file required state income tax returns.

Teresa Crawley was charged with failing to file income tax returns for 2007 and evading income taxes for the 2008 and 2009 tax years. She is currently being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

In 2008 and 2009, Crawley filed fraudulent W4 forms with her employer claiming to be exempt from taxation which caused little to no taxes to be withheld from her paychecks. She also failed to file tax returns for 2007, 2008, and 2009.

During the years for which she is charged, Crawley earned a gross income of over $266,000 and evaded over $9,800 in South Carolina income tax. Crawley could face up to $30,000 in fines and/or up to 11 years in prison if convicted of all three charges.
