Myrtle Beach Woman Arrested for 12 Tax Charges

Columbia, SC (April 2, 2013) --- Investigators from the SC Department of Revenue (DOR) arrested Cynthia Jean Williams Tuesday for twelve state tax charges related fraudulently filing of individual income tax returns.

Williams is the latest individual to be charged by DOR in a series of related arrests in a tax scam in Horry County. Cynthia Williams’ brother, Tracy Williams, was also arrested in February of this year for similar charges.

According to officials, Williams, 33, was arrested for four counts of assisting in the preparation of a fraudulent tax return, four counts of forgery, and four counts of conspiracy.

For the 2011 tax year, Williams provided fraudulent W2 forms to individuals to have income tax returns prepared in each of their names. Williams assisted in the preparation of the fraudulent returns which resulted in the individuals requesting federal and state refunds totaling $36,250 to which they were not entitled.

Cynthia Williams, a resident of Myrtle Beach, is currently being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Conway where she is awaiting a bond hearing.

If convicted of the 12 tax charges, Williams could face up to 60 years in prison and/or up to $22,000 in fines. The Horry County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the arrest.
