Colleton County Woman Arrested for State Tax Evasion


Columbia, SC (September 9, 2013) --- A Colleton County resident was arrested and charged today for years of evading state income taxes.


Investigators with the SC Department of Revenue arrested Roxanne Hughes of Walterboro on three counts of income tax evasion for the years 2009, 2010, and 2011.


During this period, Hughes, 45, earned $289,144 in wages and filed W4 withholding certificates with her employers claiming to be exempt from taxes. Minimum South Carolina income tax was subsequently withheld from Hughes’ paychecks, and she additionally failed to file South Carolina income tax returns as required by law.


Hughes current state tax liability is $12,800.


If convicted of all charges, Hughes could face up to 15 years in prison and/or up to $30,000 in fines. The Colleton County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the arrest.
