Upstate Tax Preparer Arrested on Tax Charges

Columbia, SC (September 18, 2013) --- A Greenville County tax preparer was arrested today by SC Department of Revenue investigators and charged with multiple counts of preparing fraudulent income tax returns.

Derrick Lamar Suber, a self-employed tax preparer, is being held at the Greenville County Detention Center pending a bond hearing. He is charged with 18 counts of preparing fraudulent income tax returns and three counts of tax evasion.

For 2010 and 2011, Suber is accused of preparing income tax returns for his clients that included nearly $1.3 million in fraudulent tax deductions which were reported as fictitious investment expenses and business losses from business that did not exist.

Suber displayed the same pattern of false deductions on his personal income tax returns for tax years 2007 through 2009 and is accused of reporting over $90,000 in false deductions over the three year period.

If convicted, Suber could face up to five years in prison for each of the felony tax charges and up to $39,000 in fines.
