Berkeley County Resident Arrested on Income Tax Charges

Columbia, SC (January 17, 2014) --- An individual from Berkeley County was arrested today for one count of failure to file an individual income tax return and five counts of tax evasion.

According to investigators with the SC Department of Revenue, Thomas Smith, 45, earned income for tax years 2005 through 2010 which required him by law to file income tax returns. Smith claimed exempt status for his withholding allowance for this period, and therefore had little to no income withheld from his pay.

Smith, a resident of Bonneau, has an outstanding state tax liability of $11,724.

If convicted of the charges, Smith could face up to $60,000 in fines and up to 26 years in prison.
