Beaufort County resident arrested on income tax charges

Richard E. Thomas, II was arrested on March 17, 2014 for seven counts of income tax related charges.

SC Department of Revenue officials charged Thomas, 70, with seven counts of willful failure to file income tax returns. Thomas could face fines up to $70,000 or 7 years in prison or both.

For tax years 2005 through 2011, Thomas earned income for which he was required to file South Carolina income tax returns. Thomas was identified as a potential non-filer of SC individual tax returns and filed the delinquent income tax returns after being contacted by the South Carolina Department of Revenue. The total outstanding tax liability for tax years 2005 through 2011 is $37,237.

Thomas is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center.
