Charleston County resident arrested on fraud charges

Demetria Michelle Brown was arrested on March 24, 2014 for two counts of forgery.

SC Department of Revenue officials charged Brown, 28, with one count of forgery with a value less than $5,000 and one count of forgery with a value less than $10,000.  Brown could face five years in jail for each count.

For tax years 2009 and 2011, Brown prepared and electronically filed federal and state returns via Turbo tax software using fraudulent Form W2s.  The use of the fraudulent W2s resulted in fraudulently overstated federal and South Carolina income tax refunds.  The total outstanding liability for 2009 and 2011 is $10,848.

Brown is being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center.
