Beaufort County resident arrested on tax charges

Jason J. Owen was arrested Wednesday, April 9, 2014 on sales tax related charges.

SC Department of Revenue officials charged Owen, 42, with operating a business without a license or with a suspended license.  Owen could face a maximum fine of $200 or 30 days in jail, or both.

Owen, owner of Sea Island Divers, was served a notice on May 14, 2013 for failure to file and pay sales taxes due and was given 90 days to file the sales tax returns and pay the balance due.  On September 3, 2013, Owen was personally served with a revocation notice for failure to file sales tax returns and pay the balance due.

Owen continued to operate his business after the retail license was revoked on September 3, 2013.

Owen is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center. The Town of Port Royal Police Department assisted the South Carolina Department of Revenue with the arrest.
