Anderson Clerk of Court charged with tax violations

Anderson County Clerk of Court Cathy M. Phillips is being held at the Anderson County Detention Center today after South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators arrested her on tax charges.
 
Phillips is being held pending a bond hearing on six counts of failing to pay over taxes to the State. The tax charges are not related to her duties as Clerk of Court.
 
Phillips, who is also the bookkeeper for a drywall installation business, is accused of failing to submit the employee withholding taxes collected from employees from 2002 through 2007. The revenue department estimates Phillips failed to report and submit withholding taxes of $58,142 during that period.
 
No further charges are expected in the case.
 
Phillips is facing up to five years in prison and fines of up to $10,000 on each count if convicted.
