FREE TAX HELP AVAILABLE IN COLUMBIA/LEXINGTON AREAS

With just over a month to go before the income tax filing deadline, it=s probably not a bad idea to consider what you need to do to get that tax return prepared. If you need assistance, but cannot afford to pay for professional tax service, you may want to visit one of the Columbia/Lexington-area Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program sites for free tax help.

The VITA program is co-sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Revenue and the Internal Revenue Service and is designed to assist low-income, elderly and handicapped taxpayers. TCE is sponsored by the AARP Tax-Aid Program and also is available for taxpayers who cannot pay for professional tax help.

Volunteers trained by the state revenue department and the IRS assist taxpayers in completing basic state and federal income tax returns. Care is taken to locate the sites in safe, accessible areas and no appointment is necessary

When you visit one of the tax help sites, it is necessary you bring all W-2 forms, tax schedules and itemized deduction information with you. .

In Columbia, taxpayers can visit the VITA site at the DOR headquarters located in the State Museum Building at 301Gervais Street. The site is open each Wednesday, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
