Video gaming operators pay $50 per machine to fund election

To pay for the November special referendum on video gaming, an additional $50 surcharge must be paid on all video gaming machines licensed through September 1, 1999. The South Carolina Department of Revenue will collect the fee when operators apply for their machine licenses. Operators who purchased licenses prior to the new law being signed will receive a bill in the mail from the Department of Revenue for all their current licenses.

The fee applies to both seasonal (six months) and regular (two years) licenses which are current now or purchased before September 1. This includes two-year licenses which expire May 31, 2000, or May 31, 2001, and six-month licenses which expire September 30, 1999.

All revenue collected from the surcharge will be used to help defray the costs of the special referendum in which voters will have the opportunity to decide if video gaming should continue to be legal in this state or if it should be banned.

The Department of Revenue=s website at www.sctax.org is updated regularly with information regarding changes in video gaming. Machine owners may check the Internet home page or call the Department of Revenue=s Regulatory Division at (803) 898-5390 if they have questions about the fee.
