Newberry County man charged with tax evasion
A Silverstreet man was arrested today
on tax charges after he turned himself in to South Carolina Department of
Revenue investigators.
Wayne Eichelberger, 45, of 229 Green
Acres Road, Silverstreet, was charged with four counts of state income tax
evasion and is being held at the Newberry County Detention Center pending a bond
hearing.
Eichelberger is accused of failing to
file state income tax returns from 1996 - 1999. The Department of Revenue
investigation showed Eichelberger had claimed 23 exemptions from withholding tax
on the W-4 form he supplied to his employer to avoid having taxes withheld from
his income. His income during that period was more than $200,000.
Eichelberger is facing up to 20 years
in prison and fines of up to $40,000 if convicted of the charges.
