Denmark police chief arrested on tax charges

               South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators today arrested  Denmark (S.C.) Police Chief Joseph Stothart Jenkins, Jr. and charged him with failing to file his state income tax return.

            Bamberg County Magistrate Franklin Gibson released Jenkins this morning on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

            The Department of Revenue alleges that Jenkins, 60, willfully failed to file his 2001 state income tax return and owes $2,164 in back taxes. Jenkins could be sent to prison for one year and fined up to $10,000 if convicted of the charge.
