Clarendon County tax preparer charged with tax fraud
South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators arrested a Davis Station tax preparer today and charged him with submitting a fraudulent state income tax return to the agency.
Dwayne C. Doughty, 40, is being held at the Clarendon County Detention Center pending a bond hearing. Doughty is charged with one count of preparing a fraudulent 2002 state income tax return for a client. He is accused of trying to obtain a larger tax refund for his client by exaggerating the taxpayer's deductions on the return.
Doughty, who prepares tax returns from his home, is facing up to five years in prison and a $500 fine if convicted of the charge.
With the beginning of the income tax filing season, the Department of Revenue urges taxpayers to choose a tax preparer carefully. Ask the preparer about his tax education, experience and background. Ask for references and make sure the tax preparer will be available if you are audited or have problems with your return.
Do not sign a tax return until you have checked the information on the return and are satisfied the information is correct.
Taxpayers who knowingly submit a fraudulent income tax return to the Department of Revenue also could be subject to criminal prosecution, even if someone else prepared the return.
