S.C. Department of Revenue charges

Georgia resident with tax evasion

A Georgia resident employed at South Carolina’s Savannah River Plant in Aiken is in jail today after South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators charged her with income tax evasion.

Charlotte Johnson, a resident of Martinez, Ga., is being held at the Richland County Detention Center pending a bond hearing after DOR investigators charged her with three counts of state income tax evasion.

Johnson is accused of filing a fraudulent W-4 withholding certificate with her employer illegally exempting her from having state income taxes withheld from her wages from 2000 – 2002. She also is accused of failing to file state income tax returns for those same years. The Department estimates Johnson had taxable income during the three years totaling more than $153,260.

Johnson is facing up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $30,000 if convicted of all the charges.
