Georgetown resident arrested on tax charges

            A Georgetown resident is being held at the Georgetown County Detention Center today after South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators charged her with failing to file her tax returns.

            Janice B. Thornton, 56, 37 Lakewood Drive, was charged with three counts of failing to file state income tax returns. She is being held at the detention center pending a bond hearing later today.

            Thornton, who is employed by a surveying company, is accused of failing to file income tax returns from 2000 – 2002. The Department of Revenue estimates her total income during that period was more than $184,650.

            Thornton is facing up to three years in prison and fines of up to $30,000 if convicted of all the charges. The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Department assisted the revenue department in Thornton’s arrest.
