Surfside Beach contractor arrested on tax charges

A self-employed Surfside Beach contractor and landscaper is being held at the

J. Reuben Long Detention Center on tax evasion charges after turning himself in this morning to South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators and Horry County Sheriff’s Department deputies.

Paul J. VanderWiele, 44, owner of Paul VanderWiele and VanderWiele Services and Splash Services Unlimited, was charged with two counts of state income tax evasion following his arrest. He remains in custody pending a bond hearing.

VanderWiele is accused of failing to file state income tax returns in 1999 and 2000. The Department of Revenue estimates he has a tax liability of $8,679 on total income of $346,477 earned during the two years.

VanderWiele is facing up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $20,000 if convicted of the charges.
