NEWS RELEASE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE Public Affairs Office Contact: Danny Brazell Phone: (803) 898-5464 Email: brazeld@sctax.org _____________________________________________________ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 28, 2003 Monday is deadline for electronically-filed returns Monday, May 3 is the filing deadline for South Carolina taxpayers who chose to extend the tax deadline beyond April 15 by filing their returns electronically. For the past four years the South Carolina Department of Revenue has allowed the extra two weeks to file as an incentive for taxpayers to try the state’s computer-filing programs. The extension applies even if the taxpayer owes. The May 3 deadline does not apply to those filing paper returns or to federal tax returns. While there are still a lot of tax returns to process – the Department has processed 1.7 million of the 2.2 million returns expected this year – nearly 56% of the state returns received by the Department so far were filed electronically. South Carolina is tied with Minnesota for second in the nation in the percentage of taxpayers filing electronically, according to an Internal Revenue Service ranking. Iowa is first. ### Processing Statistics: | | | As of : | April 26, 2004 | Total returns processed: | 1,716,900 | Paper returns processed: | 756,069 | Electronic returns processed: | 960,831 | % of Total Filed Electronic: | 55% | Total refunds issued: | 1,170,046 | Average refund: | $607.85 |
