Owners of vacation rental property

May owe accommodations tax

            South Carolina homeowners who rent their property to vacationers themselves and do not use an agent, broker or any other listing service, could owe the state a sales tax on those accommodations. 

            To help homeowners understand the state’s tax laws on renting their home to vacation guests, the South Carolina Department of Revenue has issued Revenue Ruling #04-12 explaining in detail the circumstances under which homeowners must collect the sales tax on accommodations. The ruling also gives the circumstances in which the property may be exempt from taxes.
