Charleston County adds half cent sales tax May 1

            The sales and use tax rate in Charleston County will increase to 6.5% on May 1 when retailers begin collecting the .5% transportation sales tax approved by county voters in November.

            The transportation tax will be applied to all sales currently taxed at the 6% rate.

            Retailers with questions on collecting and reporting the tax can call the S.C. Department of Revenue Charleston office at (843) 852-3600, or the Columbia call center at (803) 898-5788.
