Charleston truck driver arrested on tax charges

South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators arrested a Charleston truck driver Wednesday afternoon on charges of filing fraudulent tax returns with the agency.

James C. Grant, 50, was released from the Charleston County Detention Center on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond Wednesday following his arrest on four counts of state income tax evasion.

Grant, who is a truck driver for a grocery chain, is accused of claiming fraudulent deductions on his tax returns from 2000 – 2003 to obtain a larger refund than he was entitled. The Department estimates Grant’s total tax liability from his fraudulent claims during that period is $5,416.

Grant is facing up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $40,000 if convicted of all the charges.
