Charleston resident arrested on tax charge
South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators arrested a Charleston resident today for submitting a fraudulent tax document with his 2007 state income tax return.
Elliott Brown, 25, a restaurant employee, is being held at the Charleston County Detention Center pending a bond hearing. He is charged with one count of submitting a false tax document to the Department of Revenue.
Brown is accused of filing an altered W-2 form with his 2007 tax return in an attempt to receive a larger state tax refund. Brown’s W-2 withholding statement showed he had state tax of $927 withheld from his wages when his actual withholding was $202. The change meant Brown would have received a tax refund of $725 more than he was entitled.
He is facing up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $5,000 if convicted of the charge.
