Columbia Resident Arrested on Tax Charges in Greenville
A Richland County resident was arrested today following charges of state income tax evasion.
South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators charged Gerard Herman Lin, with three counts of income tax evasion for tax years 2005, 2006 and 2007. He is being held at the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center pending a bond hearing.
Lin, who hired someone else to prepare his returns, is accused of claiming more than $88,000 in bogus tax deductions on his 2005, 2006, and 2007 state tax returns. During an audit of the tax returns, Lin submitted false documents to the Department of Revenue in attempts to verify the bogus deductions claimed on the returns. The Department estimates Lin attempted to evade more than $5,000 of state income tax for the periods.
He is facing up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $30,000 if convicted of the charges.
