SCDOR and SCDEW Take Initial Steps to Forge Partnership

Columbia, SC --- The SC Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) and the SC Department of Revenue (DOR) today took initial steps to collaborate on how taxes are processed for businesses in South Carolina. DEW Executive Director John L. Finan and the DOR Director Jim Etter signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the objective of both agencies working together to provide one place where businesses can go to pay all their state taxes and to explore efficiencies on how these taxes are collected.

“Both DEW and DOR bill and collect taxes from S.C. businesses. It only makes good business sense for our two agencies to explore areas for mutual cooperation and to implement a modern system that is more user-friendly for our state’s businesses,” said Finan.

The agencies agreed to sign the MOU to help meet the needs of the state for increased efficiency and cooperation among cabinet agencies and to better serve businesses by building a long-term working relationship, prioritizing similar goals, and aligning ongoing and future efforts between the agencies.

Etter stated that “the cooperation between the two agencies will benefit the business community, as well as the state.  The goal is to make our operations more user-friendly and allow taxpayers to use a single point to file their returns and process payments.  The SCBOS (South Carolina Business One Stop) system used by DOR has been very successful in facilitating user-friendly registration and filings. SCBOS is the perfect system platform to improve efficiency and cost savings for both agencies.”

The MOU comes at a time when the state is making changes and progressing toward more fiscal responsibility and accountability as well as improving and modernizing the way it does business.

Although in its preliminary stages, the partnership between the agencies aims to focus collective efforts on streamlining ways to assist businesses and promoting the goal of efficiency through technology and eliminating duplication.
