Elgin man charged with tax evasion

An Elgin man is in jail following his arrest today on tax evasion charges.

Stanley J. Rivers is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia pending a bond hearing. He is charged with three counts of state income tax evasion.

Rivers, 47, is accused of intentionally failing to file state income tax returns from 2003 – 2005, and report income of $207,246 during that period. The Department of Revenue estimates Rivers’ tax liability at $13,422 for the years he failed to file.

Rivers is facing up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $30,000 if convicted of the charges.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department assisted in Rivers’ arrest.
