S.C. DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE REMINDS TAXPAYERS OF FILING DEADLINES

AND ENCOURAGES ELECTRONIC FILING

COLUMBIA, S.C. With more than 1.1 million individual income tax returns already processed in South Carolina this year, the South Carolina Department of Revenue reminds taxpayers of filing deadlines and encourages South Carolinians to file electronically.

South Carolinians who choose to file their South Carolina state individual income tax return electronically have until May 1 to file a state return. The May 1 electronic filing deadline only applies to state returns.  Those who file a paper return must file by April 17.

As of March 15, the Department of Revenue has processed approximately 1.1 million individual income tax returns.

Of the 1.1 million processed returns:

Approximately 814,000 were filed electronically, allowing taxpayers to receive a refund in about two weeks.

Approximately 825,000 received a refund.  The average refund is $647.

If taxpayers receive a refund, all electronic filing methods provide the option of having refunds deposited directly into the individual's bank account.  Taxpayers who owe taxes may opt to take advantage of Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW).  This option allows the Department to withdraw money from their bank checking or savings account at a time selected by the taxpayer.

South Carolina reached a milestone in electronic filing in tax year 2004 when the Department received over one million electronically filed returns. Based on statistics compiled by the Federation of Tax Administrators (FTA), South Carolina has ranked in the top five or higher each of the last six years in the percentage of taxpayers that file their individual income tax returns electronically.
