A Greenville County tax preparer was arrested Friday afternoon by South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators and charged with multiple counts of preparing fraudulent income tax returns.

Clint D. Sharpe, a tax preparer for a local tax preparation company is being held at the Greenville County Detention Center pending a bond hearing. He is charged with eight counts of preparing fraudulent income tax returns and is facing up to 40 years in prison if convicted of the charges.

Sharpe is accused of falsifying business miles, employee business expenses, and charitable contributions on income tax returns prepared for his clients. Sharpe is accused of falsifying more than $100,000 of deductions on tax returns prepared for tax year 2007.

The Department’s investigation showed Sharpe’s clients were unaware of the fraudulent claims on their returns.
