Greenville resident arrested on tax charges
A Greenville County warehouse employee was jailed today following his arrest for the second time in three years on state tax evasion charges.
South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators charged Clarence N. Evans, 40, with four counts of tax evasion for tax years 2004 - 2007. He is being held at the Greenville County Detention Center on a $20,000 surety bond. Evans was arrested in May 2005 on similar charges.
In the latest charges, Evans is accused of filing fraudulent W-4 withholding forms with his employer to avoid having taxes withheld from his wages. His tax liability for the period charged is $5,203.
Evans was charged with three counts of state tax evasion in 2005 when he was employed by a Mauldin-based warehouse. He pled guilty to tax evasion and is currently on probation for the previous charges.
Evans is facing up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $40,000 if convicted of the latest charges. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office assisted in Evans’ arrest.
