Pickens County resident arrested on tax charges

A Pickens County resident was jailed yesterday afternoon following his arrest for state tax evasion charges.

South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators charged Leldon T. Oates, with five counts of income tax evasion for tax years 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007.  He was also charged with one count of failing to file a tax return for 2008. He is being held at the Pickens County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

The Department of Revenue investigation showed Oates earned income in excess of $300,000 during the period of investigation.  Oates is accused of filing fraudulent W-4 withholding forms with his employer to avoid having taxes withheld from his wages. His state tax liability for the period charged is $12,859.

Oates is facing up to 26 years in prison and fines of up to $60,000 if convicted of the charges.

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office and Mauldin Police Department assisted in the arrest.
