SCDOR will offer Free File for 2009 Individual Income Tax Filing Season

South Carolina Individual Income Tax booklets mailing discountinued

Columbia, SC…The South Carolina Department of Revenue will again take part in the Free File Alliance allowing eligible SC taxpayers to electronically prepare and file both their federal and South Carolina returns for free. The free electronic filing and tax preparation initiative is offered through a public- private partnership between SCDOR and private-sector software companies.

At least 50 percent of SC taxpayers are eligible to participate in the Free File program by meeting the income threshold of $30,000 or less--an amount that is higher than the SC per capita income. In addition, eligibility requirements for free file status exist for taxpayers 65 or older as well as for students. Taxpayers can choose from four tax preparation software companies.

Free File allows qualified taxpayers to prepare and file federal and state returns at the same time with no cost or hidden fees. Taxpayers filing electronically may receive a faster refund and, when choosing direct deposit, refunds can be received in as little as 10 days from the date of filing.

Taxpayers also benefit from Free File’s automatic check for accuracy. Free File is user-friendly, completely paperless, safe and secure.

What’s New in 2010

In an effort to GO GREEN, SCDOR will discontinue the mass mailing of the Individual Income Tax booklet directly to taxpayers. The decision to discontinue this service is in response to the decreased use of this booklet, our efforts to cut government spending, as well as our commitment to the environment. This effort will affect less than 10% of the 2.4 million SC taxpayers with a cost savings to the state of about $271,000. SCDOR encourages taxpayers to electronically file instead of mailing a paper tax return.

There are many advantages to electronically filing your tax return such as secure online transmission, quick confirmation of receipt of your return, fast refund with direct deposit and many more. South Carolina 2009 Individual Income Tax Forms and Instructions can be accessed one of several ways including online by visiting www.sctax.org/Forms+and+Instructions/default.htm; by calling Fax-on-Demand at 1-800- 868-3676; or, by calling 803-898-5320 to request to receive a booklet via US mail.
