Sumter County tax preparer charged with fraud, tax evasion and forgery

Sumter…South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators arrested a Sumter County tax preparer today and charged him with multiple counts of tax fraud, tax evasion and forgery.

Charles Anthony Shannon, 40, owner of both Mountain Brook Homes II and Quick Tax Refunds, is being held at the Sumter County Detention Center pending a bond hearing. Shannon was charged with 11 counts of preparation of a fraudulent tax return, two counts of failure to collect and pay taxes and one count of forgery.

Shannon is accused of overstating deductions and/or using fraudulent W-2’s on tax returns he prepared for his clients, thereby, generating larger refunds. The DOR investigation showed that clients were unaware of Shannon’s activities. He also is accused of failing to file employer withholding tax returns to account for and remit taxes withheld from his employees who worked for him at Mountain Brook Homes II in Sumter.

Additionally, Shannon owned Quick Tax Refunds in Sumter and is accused of filing an income tax return in the name of another person without that person’s knowledge. The return was presented with a fraudulent W-2 and the refund was deposited into Shannon’s account for his personal use.
Shannon is facing up to 70 years in prison and fines of up to $25,500 if convicted.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the arrest.
