Charleston man arrested for income tax evasion

Charleston, SC…Alvin Mark Johnston, Jr. was arrested Wednesday morning in Charleston County on two counts of income tax evasion. For tax years 2005 and 2006, Johnston is accused of evading state income taxes by filing a fraudulent W-4 form claiming to be exempt from taxes, thereby causing his employer to withhold no state income taxes from his wages.  Johnston then did not file state income tax returns for 2005 and 2006 and owed the state $2,927.00 and $2,263.00, respectively.

Johnston turned himself in to South Carolina Department of Revenue officials and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.  He was being held in the Charleston County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

If convicted, Johnston is facing up to 10 years in prison and/or fines up to $20,000, plus the cost of prosecution.
