South Carolina Department of Revenue - Security Breach Information

 
Enrollment in the Family Secure plan ends May 31, 2013. If you need a Family Secure activation code to enroll you minor dependents contact Experian at 1 (866) 578-5422 to obtain a code. The parent and/or guardian must have enrolled with ProtectMyID by March 31, 2013 to be eligible for Family Secure.

Attention individuals: The deadline to enroll in Experian’s ProtectMyID credit monitoring service was March, 31 2013.
 
IMPORTANT: Due to the recent security breach, it is important to note that the SC Department of Revenue would not initiate contact by phone with any individual and ask for personal identifying information. Please be aware of potential scams and should you receive such a call, please hang up and call us directly at (803) 898-5000.
 
SC Department of Revenue Security Breach

Approximately 3.8 million Social Security numbers, 387,000 credit and debit card numbers and 657,000 business tax filings were exposed in a security breach at the SC Department of Revenue.

Experian's ProtectMyID

One year of free credit monitoring with Experian’s ProtectMyID was offered for individuals potentially affected by the security breach. While the deadline for ProtectMyID enrollment has closed, individuals can utilize other protections such as fraud alerts or credit freezes. For information on placing fraud alerts, credit freezes, and other protection resources please refer to the SC Department of Consumer Affair’s website at www.consumer.sc.gov.

Experian's Family Secure

Upon enrollment with ProtectMyID, taxpayers who claim minors as dependents received notification from Experian with instructions on how to enroll minors for Experian’s Family Secure plan. The enrollment deadline for Family Secure is May 31, 2013.

Business Protection

South Carolina businesses still have the opportunity to sign up for credit monitoring services for free through Dun & Bradstreet Credibility Corp. The deadline for enrollment is December 31, 2013. To sign up:

  • Dun & Bradstreet Credibility Corp is offering South Carolina businesses a CreditAlert product that will alert customers to changes taking place in their business credit file.
Business owners can visit http://www.dandb.com/sc/ or they can call customer service toll free at 1-800-279-9881.
